The First Parliamentary Youth Programme was launched on Tuesday, 6th August 2013 at Parliament Precincts Mulinuu, to coincide with the August Session of Parliament. This Programme is one of many public engagement initiatives developed and coordinated by the Office of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly under the Samoa Parliamentary Support Project (SPSP) sponsored by the Government of Australia and the Government of Samoa with other development partners such as the UNDP Multi Country Office and the Pacific Parliamentary Partnerships Programme. Mr Anthony Wood, Deputy Resident Representative, UNDP Samoa Office delivered the Opening Address.
It is the result of a participatory video project facilitated by InsightShare (www.insightshare.org) on behalf of the Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) Programme, which is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF, www.gefweb.org) and implemented by UNDP, in partnership with the GEF Small Grants Programme and the United Nations Volunteers. This shortened version of the original 25-minuted video features the initiatives of vulnerable communities to mitigate the impacts of climate change on their environment, livelihoods and infrastructure. Ambassador Mark Gilbert swore in the 87th group of Peace Corps volunteers in a ceremony held at the TATTE Conference Center, Apia, Samoa. The new volunteers, who range in age from their early 20s to 65, will work in partnership with the Samoa Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture for the 2016 and 2017 school years as English Literacy Resource Volunteers working alongside school principals and teachers at government primary schools throughout Upolu and Savaii to promote teaching and learning capacities in English Literacy.

This is a brief overview of the work carried out under the Marine Debris Demonstration project to help strengthen the and enhance good waste practices in Samoa The project is a partnership between the Government of Samoa, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), SPREP and the communities and private sector in Apia. There are four main areas in this project; community and media awareness; improved waste management in the ports of entry into Samoa in particular the Samoa Port and Samoa Airport; waste disposal facilities within the UNSIDS venue and the accommodation providers; and working with the communities to improve waste practices in Apia areas. It comes exactly forty years after the first Vailima Beer rolled off the production line at the newly opened Samoa Breweries Limited brewery in the nation’s capital, Apia. Commissioner Mimica signs a new partnership with the Prime Minister of Samoa, Tuilaepa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, to support Samoa with €20.2 million. The new funding will be provided in the form of €17.1million budget support for water and sanitation and €3 million to help the country adapt to the impact of climate change, through the Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) and €100,000 for auditing and evaluation. The new partnership is expected to significantly increase the share of the Samoan population who have access to clean water, from the current 75% to up to 90% by 2018.
